Monarch butterfly caterpillar on common milkweed on the Indiana Dunes State Park foredune overlooking Lake Michigan is the 2021 Dig The Dunes cover photograph.
Over the last two decades, these beautiful and iconic butterflies have lost 80% of their population east of the Rocky Mountains. To help out this species, it is important to plant native milkweed plants (which are not weeds at all!) as these are the only plants the caterpillar can eat, and food for the adult butterflies, such as blazing star. |
